Safety
Sedgman is committed to the safety of our employees, contractors and the communities in which we operate. We are committed to the principle that all workplace injuries and illnesses can be prevented. The key to prevention lies in management commitment supported by appropriate safety management systems and processes.
The following are some examples of Safety initiatives at Sedgman.
Safety Leadership Program
During 2007 Sedgman Coal Operations rolled out their Safety Leadership Program. The program's three main objectives were to:
- Communicate the standards expected by the company of the participants;
- Provide an understanding of how to meet these standards; and
- Assist each participant in identifying their improvement opportunities.
The first workshop was held in March 2007 and was attended by the operations management team. Five subsequent workshops were held ensuring that each individual in Coal Operations could attend. The response to date has been positive, demonstrated by an increasing number of individuals taking personal responsibility for addressing safety in the workplace.
Pac-Rim HSE Workshop
In May 2007 the importance of HSE in the way that Sedgman subsidiary Pac-Rim does business was reinforced. A front-line workshop was held at their home base of Townsville. The theme of the workshop was the importance of looking after employees and striving for HSE excellence. The workshop was attended by all operational managers, including site managers.
The group was addressed by Sedgman Metals' Chief Operating Officer, Mark Duffy, and Sedgman Managing Director, Peter Hay. They focused on the importance of HSE leadership and management and the profound impact it has on the business. They also highlighted the level of commitment and expectations that executive and senior managers have towards the health and safety of workers and the environment. The workshop provided an excellent platform for the management team to acknowledge and understand the core Pac-Rim HSE policy. It also allowed the group to make decisions on proposed HSE management initiatives such as improved front-line risk management processes.
Incident Cause Analysis Method (ICAM)
In 2006 Sedgman began using a new incident investigation tool. Incident Cause Analysis Method (ICAM) is an investigation process that looks beyond the errors and violations of individuals and examines the contributing factors leading to these occurrences. ICAM enables identification of systematic deficiencies, assists in identifying what really went wrong and ensures recommendations are focused on what needs to be done to prevent reoccurrence.
