Sedgman Coal

Meeting client needs with superior processing and materials handling technologies has placed Sedgman at the forefront of new global coal mining development and operations.

Since our inception in 1979, Sedgman has accumulated significant intellectual property resources through resident professional staff whose expertise is continually enhanced by exposure to Sedgman resource industry projects world wide.

Their professional expertise in all relevant engineering, design and drafting disciplines, and their continual exposure to leading edge technologies, in turn sustain Sedgman's commitment to the optimisation of our clients' coal treatment and handling operations.

Today, our success and performance is underpinned by one of the largest coal-specific engineering workforces in the world.

The stability, loyalty and continuity of our professional staff has permitted Sedgman's active involvement in many of the major new coal processing facilities developed over the past 15 years.

We are also involved in modifying existing plants, incorporating latest know-how, utilising the strength of our in-house engineering and design resources.

EXPERTISE

The very essence of our corporate philosophy is to tailor products and services that provide the most cost-efficient solutions to each and every client's needs, whether they relate to conceptual studies or complex projects.

Based on client requirements and our experience with many proven configurations, Sedgman can provide complete modular facilities, or auxiliary circuits linked to client-owned plant to increase output, decrease operating costs, upgrade quality and manage asset and labour needs.

Clients trust us to operate and manage their plants through long-term contracts. In turn they are rewarded by performance that exceeds industry benchmarks.

SAFETY

Sedgman's Engineering Technical Safety in Design Procedure incorporates the implementation of risk assessment and hazard identification methods integrally in the plants we design to eliminate or minimise the risks of injury throughout the life of the plant.

It encompasses all design including facilities, hardware, systems, equipment, products, tooling, materials, energy controls, layout and configuration.

Having a Safety in Design process in place ensures avoidance of rework as a result of any incorrect assumptions around design requirements.

It provides a contribution to the goal of a workplace free from injury from both the client and Sedgman perspectives during operation.

It ensures all elements across the plant lifecycle perform in a safe manner and it allows documentation and communication to internal and external stakeholders of safe design approaches.

Safety management and operator training is a key factor in Sedgman's approach to operations and project delivery.

Sedgman is totally committed to the principle that all workplace injuries and illnesses can be prevented. The Sedgman Safety Management System complies with and conforms to:

  • Coal Mining Safety and Health Act and Regulations (Qld)(CMSHR);
  • AS1470 Health and Safety at Work, Principles and Practices;
  • AS4360 Risk Management.

Sedgman's training system complies with the requirements of the CMSHR and will meet the needs of the coal industry training package.

The Sedgman training system is developed around the MNC04 Coal Training Package and competency based assessment and training. As Sedgman is aligned with a registered training authority (Sharp Training), we have the capability to train and assess personnel to the national standards.

INNOVATION

Sedgman has built its reputation by applying its industry knowledge to develop innovative CHPP concepts and designs. Our ongoing innovation and research embodies our commitment to always finding the best possible process. Sedgman has developed technologies and applications that deliver optimised services and products to our clients. Our technology developments have been across the range of engineering services from estimating, through to procurement and project management to detailed design and drafting.

Sedgman's innovations include:

Coal Prep - a software package used to model and simulate coal preparation plant performance. The Coal Prep software tool is used from project feasibility evaluation to final design to ensure that plant design and product mix optimises capital costs and product yield

Sedgman Administration System (SAS) - an integrated estimating, project controls and job costing system compiling information on past and current design components and costs. The SAS also includes an integrated design management module to budget and monitor design hours and drafting progress

Computer Aided Drafting - Sedgman was an earliest user of three dimensional computer aided drafting (CAD) technology. We have developed our own 3D surface modelling and plant design systems and tools based on the AutoCAD computer aided drafting platform

SCORS - SCORS (Sedgman Coal Operations Reporting System) is a production monitoring and reporting system developed for Sedgman's multiple-contract operations of CHPPs. SCORS is an innovative system built specifically to address the shortcoming of traditional procedures and "work-arounds" and the absence of a commercially-available product. SCORS delivers Sedgman a world-class information repository and reporting system built on the four principles of scalability, data integrity, security and audit ability. Data feeds into the repository can come from any number of disparate production systems such as SCADA, scheduling and maintenance systems, spreadsheets and manually-entered sources. The reporting system provides for single or multi-site formalised management reporting, operations level reporting, and scheduled reporting for external clients.

SCORS has enabled the realisation of several innovations to sustain continuous improvement in processes and plant operations across remote regional facilities... real-time data made into real-time information for real-time decision making. SCORS integrates existing production data systems, providing an improved capacity to monitor and report on production data. SCORS is a valuable tool for both site staff and off-site support as it can assist a control room operator to run a stockpile quality report as well as remotely monitor KPI dashboards of operating sites around the world.
