Benga School Project Profile

We re-built a school in Mozambique for 700 local children

Sedgman staff initiated a program with support from the leadership team and staff globally to renovate the Benga Primary School situated in the village next to our Benga CHPP project in Tete, Mozambique. On their first visit to the school, our team found more than 700 pupils housed in two dilapidated buildings. Children sat on the floor for classes with no electricity or running water, holes in the walls substituting for windows, blackboards white with wear and a rocky field which doubled as a playground and sporting oval

An internal fundraising program saw money pour in from Sedgman staff globally, which added to the generous funding provided by the company. We garnered the support of contractors at our Benga CHPP as well as local companies, bringing the community together in obtaining donations of significant materials and supplies, raising funds and committing hundreds of man-hours to re-build the entire school including two class-room buildings, a library and an administrative building. All rooms were freshly painted and fitted with desks and computers. Stationery supplies have been donated, the soccer field graded and a basketball court installed. The project is ongoing, and is testament to the community spirit that is embraced within Sedgman.
